History

Old Town Christian Ministries Thrift Store, nestled within Bellingham’s historic Daylight Building, boasts a fascinating and somewhat unsettling backstory.

Established in 1928, the store’s origins lie in the building’s earlier days as a hub of local commerce.

The Daylight Building, constructed in 1904 by Frank C. Burns, previously housed a diverse range of businesses including a dressmaker, dry goods store, lawyer, real estate agent, and a music school.

The building’s history is marked by significant events, including a devastating 1928 fire that damaged Montgomery Ward stock and surrounding apartments.

Even more notably, 1933 saw the unsolved murder of Herbert E. Myers at the building’s entrance, adding a layer of intrigue to the location's past.

The building’s architectural significance is underscored by its designation on the National Register of Historic Places, awarded in 2004.

Though the thrift store operated from 1928 until 2003, when it closed, the building’s legacy as a focal point of Bellingham’s history remains a core component of the Old Town Christian Ministries Thrift Store’s appeal.
