History

The thrift store’s origins trace back to 1887 with Oren D. Allyn’s sales of properties in Springfield’s Oakdale neighborhood.

Subsequent development involved the subdivision and sale of properties to workers, linked to the area’s industrial growth.

In 1888, Clemens Herschel detailed his Venturi meter development to William Unwin, and William L. Morgan published the first edition of the abolitionist “Hampden Freeman.” The city of Holyoke incorporated in 1850.

The Parsons Paper Company established in 1853 used an old grist mill and was associated with dam construction.

Dam construction in 1849 and its collapse in 1888 highlighted engineering challenges and water resource concerns.

A cholera outbreak in 1849-1850 impacted the city’s population and infrastructure.

Interstate 391 construction began in 1967.
