History
Starr Farm Dog Park in Burlington, Vermont, offers a unique setting for dog owners.
Situated on Starr Farm, which is part of the east side of Middlebury College’s campus, the park’s origins are rooted in a period of competition between Middlebury College and the University of Vermont at Burlington.
The construction of Starr Farm and its associated buildings, including Old Stone Row – a collection of three stone buildings dating from the 1830s to the 1860s – stemmed from this rivalry.
Old Chapel (1834-36), with its prominent belltower, Painter Hall (1812-16), and Starr Hall (1860s) were designed with architectural references to each other and local stone mills, reflecting the area’s mill construction styles.
The buildings themselves are constructed of locally quarried limestone laid in irregular courses, a common feature of the time.
The park’s design incorporates the historical buildings, offering a blend of recreation and architectural interest.
