History

Dog-ParkBurkes Beach is a unique dog park located on Burke’s Beach, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

The park’s origins trace back to a growing community desire for a designated, off-leash area for dogs to exercise and socialize, directly on the beautiful beach.

Recognizing the increasing number of dog owners on the island and the popularity of Burke’s Beach, a group of local residents and the Hilton Head Recreation Department collaborated to establish the park.

Initial discussions began informally within the Hilton Head dog-owning community, expressing a need for a safe, contained space for dogs to play without the constraints of a leash.

The Recreation Department, seeing the value in meeting this demand and aligning with their broader goal of promoting outdoor recreation, formally supported the project.

Construction of the park was funded through a combination of community fundraising efforts and grants, primarily focused on creating a secure perimeter to prevent dogs from running onto the main beach and ensuring the safety of beachgoers.

The park opened to the public in 2018 and has since become a beloved local fixture, providing a vital space for dog owners and their canine companions on Hilton Head Island.
