Fatal Dog Attack Prompts Warning at Lake Padden

The City of Bellingham has issued a warning to pet owners after a dog was fatally attacked at Lake Padden Park on Friday, April 11, 2025. The incident occurred during the day on the off-leash trails between the dog park and Galbraith Trailhead.
What Happened?
According to Parks and Recreation Operations Manager Steve Janiszewski, the dog wandered off the trail and into the trees while on a walk. The owner heard barking followed by silence. When they located the dog, it had sustained severe bite wounds to the neck and later died at an emergency clinic.
Cause of the Attack
The veterinarian indicated the injuries were consistent with an attack by a coyote or possibly another dog. While no coyotes were seen during the incident, the city has received multiple reports of coyote sightings in the area recently.
What the City Is Doing
Bellingham Parks and Recreation has placed warning signs at both Lake Padden and Whatcom Falls parks. Officials are urging dog owners to remain alert, keep pets close, and avoid wooded areas when possible.
Safety Recommendations
Pet owners are advised to use leashes, avoid walking pets during dawn or dusk hours when wildlife is more active, and report any aggressive animal behavior or sightings to the city’s park department immediately.
