History

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park’s dog park began as part of the park’s broader history, established in 1903 as a portion of the Laurentian Mixed Forest Province.

The area, characterized by coniferous forest, mixed hardwood, and conifer bogs and swamps, has a rich educational past.

Initial developments included the introduction of Latin and music in 1903, followed by the addition of science and sewing in 1906.

A school operated from 1908-1909, educating 98 students with 7 teachers.

This park’s evolution reflects a long-standing commitment to providing public spaces for recreation within the Two Harbors community, now formalized into a designated dog park area.
