History

Lake Manawa State Park, established in 1881, holds a significant place in Iowa's recreational history.

Initially conceived as a recreation center, the park’s development reflects the evolving needs and desires of the surrounding communities.

The establishment was largely driven by residents of Adair, Casey, Menlo, Stuart, and Dexter, who recognized the potential for tourism diversion from the I-80/US 6 corridor.

This initiative culminated in the creation of the White Pole Road, a 26-mile route painted white, designed to draw visitors to the smaller towns along the way.

In 2002, the park was formally established as a 1,529-acre state park, continuing to serve as a vital outdoor destination for residents and tourists alike.

The park’s initial focus on recreation expanded over the years, incorporating elements of conservation and ecological stewardship while maintaining its commitment to providing accessible outdoor opportunities.
