History

History Fort Massac State Park in Metropolis, Illinois, offers a fascinating journey into the past, primarily through its significance as a site of the Kincaid focus, an important Mississippian culture settlement.

Archaeological evidence reveals a layered history beginning with the Faulkner Component, a pre-pottery culture similar to later Early Woodland cultures like the Adena culture (1000 to 20 BCE).

This early occupation transitioned into more intensive use during the Early Woodland and Middle Woodland periods.

The most notable period at Kincaid occurred with the Mississippian culture, which emerged from the local Lewis community around 1050 CE.

This culture profoundly influenced the site, and the people at Kincaid constructed at least 19 earthwork mounds, predominantly Mississippian platform mounds.

Remarkably, Kincaid was located near Cahokia, approximately 140 miles (230 km) away, and likely experienced significant influence from the development of Cahokia as a major Mississippian site in North America.

The park continues to be a valuable site for archaeological research and preservation, offering insights into the complex history of the Ohio River Valley and the Mississippian culture.

The annual Fort Massac Encampment, held in October, provides a living history experience, showcasing 18th-century life through reenactments and demonstrations.
