West Loop Dog Park, located within the Mary Bartelme Park complex in Chicago, Illinois, is a 2.71-acre park designed for dogs and their owners.
It features a linear design of three diagonal paths, creating distinct zones – a fountain plaza, a children’s play area, a sunken dog park with a bowl and ramps, an open lawn area, a viewing hill, and seating.
The park’s history includes a former infirmary site, which has been transformed into a delightful space with a fountain, a children’s play area, and a dog park with sunken features, including a continuously filling dog bowl.
The park’s stormwater management system, utilizing permeable paving, collects water and stores it on site, which then feeds back into the park’s landscape.
The park is a result of the Chicago Park District’s acquisition of the land from the University of Illinois in 2006 and its official naming in 2010 as a tribute to Mary Bartelme, a pioneering female judge and advocate for children and women’s rights.
The park’s design incorporates historical elements like terracotta artifacts from the original building, and the park’s landscaping reflects the area’s history, with native plantings and the park’s largest planter beds.
