History

Sandy Springs Dog Park (At Morgan Falls Park) offers a unique setting for dog owners in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

Established in 2023, the park’s history stretches back millennia, beginning with the first human habitation approximately 10,000–15,000 years ago.

The area was originally inhabited by the Apache Indians, who were later displaced by the Comanche and Kiowa tribes.

Evidence of this ancient past is visible within the canyon itself, particularly the Quartermaster Formation which creates the lower wall and canyon floor with its distinctive red and white layers.

The canyon’s geological history is fascinating, shaped by the Dockum Group, including the Tecovas Formation.

Contact with Comancheros trading in New Mexico, and later, a United States military team led by Captain Isbell and Trujillo, contributed to the canyon's formation.

More recently, the park is the site of the annual outdoor historical and musical drama "Texas," presented at the Pioneer Amphitheatre since 1966.

Located within Morgan Falls Park, this dog park provides a rich backdrop for canine adventures, connecting modern dog owners to thousands of years of history in the heart of Sandy Springs.
