History

South Buena Vista Park Off-Leash Area in Vista, California, boasts a rich and surprising history.

Originally established as an inactive Jewish cemetery dating back to 1894, the land was once owned by Congregation Sherith Israel and Congregation Emanu-El.

Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Chutchui tribe of the Yelamu tribe.

This unique past is reflected in the presence of a replica of the “Mexican Liberty Bell” installed in 1966.

Significant investment, totaling up to $20 million over six decades, transformed the area into the vibrant park it is today.

This investment addressed long-standing issues of public urination and led to the installation of multiple public restroom areas.

The park’s evolution is further marked by its reopening in January 2016, celebrated with a light-up event.

Today, South Buena Vista Park attracts up to 7,000–10,000 people on sunny weekend days, enjoying its diverse amenities including two designated off-leash dog areas, six tennis courts, a multi-use court, basketball court, and sports field.

A “Leave No Trace” campaign highlights the community's commitment to preserving this space for generations to come.

The J-Church streetcar line also runs alongside the park, adding to its unique character.
