McKinley Square Dog Park, a beloved fixture in San Francisco’s Duboce Park neighborhood, offers a significant open space for dogs to play and socialize.

Established decades ago, it’s a well-established dog park that serves as a key destination for dog owners.

The history of McKinley Square is closely intertwined with the development of the surrounding Potrero Hill neighborhood.

Originally, four public housing projects (Potrero Terrace and Potrero Annex) were constructed during and after World War II, housing approximately 1,200 residents.

The neighborhood’s central location attracted working professionals during the dot-com era in the 1990s.

Today, McKinley Square is an upper-class neighborhood, with residents among the youngest in the city – a neighborhood with a median age of 35.

The area’s development is characterized by its proximity to major transportation routes, including Interstate 101 and Interstate 280, and the Caltrain line.

Historically, the area was known as “Potrero Nuevo,” granted to the De Haro family in 1844 by the Mexican government.

Francisco and Ramon de Haro, the 17-year-old twin sons of Don Francisco de Haro, then mayor of Yerba Buena, received the land.

Shortly after, Francisco and Ramon de Haro, along with their uncle Jose de los Reyes Berreyesa, were tragically killed during the Bear Flag Revolt in San Rafael, an event orchestrated by U.S. Army Major John C. Fremont.

The neighborhood’s development also saw a shift as residents moved west up onto Potrero Hill, driven by the expansion of the 101 and 280 freeways.

The division between the industrial Dogpatch and the residential Potrero Hill gradually solidified, each developing its own distinct character.

The 18th Street corridor became the central hub, featuring trendy restaurants and serving as a key commercial area.

Notably, Vermont Street, known for its seven sharp turns, is more crooked than Lombard Street.
