History

Lake Chabot Regional Park, located in Castro Valley, California, is a diverse park offering over 20 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

The park features beautiful scenery including grasslands, chaparral, and shady eucalyptus groves, alongside the shores of Lake Chabot itself.

A key feature is its connection to the East Bay Skyline National Trail, which spans 31 miles from Richmond to Castro Valley.

The park is managed by the East Bay Regional Park District and has a rich history, evolving over several decades through various acquisitions and development projects.

In 2016, the EBRPD finalized the purchase of 76 acres of ranch land east of Mount Diablo, now known as Hanson Hills Regional Park, following a joint effort with the city of Fremont and utilizing $260,000 in funding.

However, this park experienced a brief opening in May 2016 before being temporarily closed due to incomplete road improvements as required by a settlement agreement.

The park's history also includes the acquisition of the 50-acre hillside in Wildcat Canyon, initially intended to be added to the park, though its development was delayed for several years with various opening dates proposed between 2010 and 2015.

This addition ultimately led to the creation of Wildcat Canyon Regional Park.

A significant past project involved the purchase of the Byron tract, a 3.5 million dollar hillside, donated by Suncrest Homes and Antioch Holdings LLC in 2012, which is now part of Hanson Hills Regional Park.

The park’s development also includes the acquisition of land through the East Contra Costa County Habitat Conservancy, including the Deer Valley Regional Park area.

Historically, the area surrounding Lake Chabot has faced challenges with water availability, as highlighted by the East Bay Water Company's difficulties during a 2016 fire, underscoring the importance of water resources to the park's operations and surrounding community.

The park’s ongoing development reflects a commitment to providing recreational opportunities while addressing historical and environmental considerations.
