History

César E. Chávez Park Off Leash Dog Area in Berkeley, California, boasts a unique and surprisingly sustainable history.

Originally established on the site of a former landfill dating back to 1957, the area underwent significant transformation.

The landfill was sealed in 1969, paving the way for the creation of a public park.

Notably, the park incorporates a landfill gas flare station, a system designed to convert methane – a potent greenhouse gas – into carbon dioxide through controlled combustion at 1,470°F (800°C).

This innovative system reduces methane’s heat-trapping effectiveness by a factor of 25, demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility.

The park was initially known as North Waterfront Park before being renamed César E. Chávez Park in 1996.

Over 40 extraction wells collect methane from the landfill, routing it to the flare station for conversion.
