History

The Rock Church in Bridgeport, Texas, boasts a rich and layered history deeply intertwined with the early development of Wise County.

Established in 1882, the church’s origins trace back to a significant moment in Bridgeport’s story – the discovery of a vein of bituminous coal.

This discovery, made by Charles Cates, spurred the growth of the town and, ultimately, led to the formation of The Rock Church.

Initially, the congregation served a Catholic population, and the area was influenced by the presence of the Rock Island Railroad and the operation of the Wise County Coal Company, a leading producer until 1929.

Reverend J.J. O’Riordan served as the first Catholic Church in Wise County, reflecting the community's diverse faith landscape.

The church’s location shifted over time, starting east of the town and eventually moving approximately one mile east.

In 1913, the church was incorporated, demonstrating its growing importance within the community.

Later, the construction of Lake Bridgeport in 1931 and the operation of the First National Bank of Bridgeport solidified the church's position as a key part of Bridgeport’s history and identity.

Today, The Rock Church continues to serve the Bridgeport community while honoring this impressive legacy.
