History

The Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross, located in Medford, New Jersey, stands as a vital and enduring presence within the Greek Orthodox community.

Its story began in 1923 with a small group of families from Philadelphia who sought to establish a parish closer to the burgeoning Orthodox population in southern New Jersey.

Recognizing a spiritual need, these pioneering families, led by Archpriest Elias C. Koutsoumis, laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Orthodox faith in the region.

Initially, services were held in private homes, a common practice for early Orthodox communities.

As the congregation grew, the need for a dedicated church building became increasingly apparent.

This led to the construction of the current church building, a beautiful example of Byzantine architecture, which was completed in 1955.
