History

ChurchSalem Christian Union, nestled in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, boasts a rich history dating back to 1854.

Founded by J. Webb Graves, the church’s origins are deeply intertwined with the area’s early development.

Strategically located on the St.

Louis–San Francisco Railway line and serving as a stop on the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad until 1946, the church played a vital role in the region’s transportation and economic landscape.

The church’s significance extends beyond its religious function; it served as a film location for “Scenes from the 1939 film Jesse James,” highlighting its place in cinematic history.

The church’s legacy is further marked by the Centennial Mural created by Duard Marshall in 1939, commemorating the church’s 85th anniversary.

A significant event in the town's history, the Big Spring Inn burned to the ground in 1939, adding another layer to Excelsior Springs' past.

Today, ChurchSalem Christian Union, with an estimated membership of 101-500 individuals, continues to serve the community, embodying a steadfast faith and a connection to Excelsior Springs’ unique heritage.
