History

St.

Gregory’s Episcopal Church, located at 1200 Seminole Rd., Muskegon, Michigan 49441, boasts a rich history dating back to its founding in 1882.

Originally established as part of the Diocese of Grand Rapids, the church has served the Muskegon community for over a century.

The church’s early leadership included Reverend Henry Richter, the first bishop, followed by Reverend Michael Gallagher, who served as coadjutor bishop in 1915.

Throughout the 20th century, St.

Gregory’s maintained a strong presence within the Diocese of Grand Rapids.

In 1979, a significant recognition came with the elevation of St.

Isidore’s Church, affiliated with St.

Gregory’s, to the rank of minor basilica under Pope John Paul II.

Historically, the church has emphasized a welcoming atmosphere, described as “small yet welcoming, friendly congregation that embraces diversity,” and features a “family-like atmosphere” with a Fellowship Hour following the late Sunday service.

The church’s musical style varies, offering organ and piano music during the 10:30 AM service and contemporary guitar music on the third Sunday of the month.

Important historical events include the settlement of a $500,000 case involving sexual abuse by Reverend John Sullivan in 1994.

More recently, in 2019, Pope Francis supported Reverend Scott Nolan's decision regarding communion.

St.

Gregory’s Episcopal Church continues its operations in the 21st century, rooted in a long and established tradition.
