History

Streams In The Desert Lutheran Church, Tucson, Arizona, began in 1957 as a small, informal gathering of Lutherans seeking a more contemporary worship experience.

Initially meeting in private homes, the congregation grew quickly, fueled by the vision of Pastor David R. Schmidt, who desired a church that embraced a fresh approach to faith and a welcoming atmosphere for those seeking a deeper connection with God.

The church formally organized in 1961 and established its first permanent location at 3601 East River Road.

This location, initially a modest building, quickly became a central hub for the burgeoning congregation.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Streams In The Desert remained committed to its core values: vibrant worship, relevant teaching, and a strong emphasis on community.

Pastor Schmidt served as the primary leader for many years, nurturing the church’s growth and shaping its distinctive identity.

In 1985, Streams In The Desert relocated to its current, larger facility at 3601 East River Road, reflecting the continued expansion of the congregation and the church’s commitment to meeting the spiritual needs of the growing Tucson community.

This newer location provided ample space for worship, Sunday school, and various fellowship activities.

The church has consistently focused on providing a welcoming environment for visitors and establishing lasting relationships within the local area.

It continues to operate as a thriving congregation within the Lutheran Church in America.
