Established in 1895, it was founded by European Jewish immigrants seeking a place of rest within the United States.

The cemetery continues to serve the Chicagoland Jewish community and contains records dating back to the late 1890s.

Located at 6807 N. East Prairie Road, Lincolnwood, IL 60712, it’s a significant landmark with over 1,945 recorded burials.

The cemetery is notable for its carousel-style layout, featuring beautiful Catalpa trees that provide shade and contribute to the peaceful atmosphere.

The New Light Cemetery Association, established in 1896, oversees the cemetery’s operations.

This association, originally founded as the New Light Society (known as Chevra Or Chodash), was created to provide burial places for its members and their families, conduct religious services, and support memorial services and philanthropic endeavors.

The New Light Society dissolved in 1926 due to failure to file annual reports, but its legacy continues through the Cemetery Association.

History

New Light Cemetery was established in 1895 by European Jewish immigrants and continues to serve the Chicagoland Jewish community.

The cemetery was founded by the New Light Society, incorporated in 1896, to provide burial places for its members and their families, and to conduct religious services and contribute to philanthropic causes.

The New Light Society dissolved in 1926 due to failure to file annual reports, at which time its activities were taken over by the New Light Cemetery Association.

As of September 19, 2017, the cemetery held 1,945 records dating back to the late 1890s, as indexed by JGSI member Alvin Holtzman.

It remains an active cemetery today.
